2329 San Pablo Ave

On this spot, the last known grizzly bear attack in Berkeley. The original Charlie's saloon stood here until destroyed by fire in 1892. Bar patron Clyde McCready stumbled into Ol' Southpaw, an eight-foot-tall taxidermy bear. The bear fell onto a table, knocking a kerosene lamp over and consuming the building in an inferno. Ol' Southpaw never attacked again.
